Mary has been volunteering at The Bloom Closet for more than 5 years. Originally from Tennessee, Mary grew up with a strong desire to give back to those in need “Everybody has something they can give,” she says. “I had a 45-minute window of time during my son’s activity schedule, so I decided to spend it helping at The Bloom Closet.” Mary works in The Bloom Closet helping to organize donations and assist with foster children and families as they “shop” for clothing.

“I love seeing the kid’s faces when they shop,” Mary comments. “One teenager’s face lit up when she found the perfect prom dress.” For other children, sometimes all they need is a friendly face. “Another young foster child told me nobody wanted to be her friend. As she left, I smiled, waved, and shouted ‘bye, friend!’ Her face lit up when she realized I was waving to her.”

One of Mary’s favorite quotes was said by Mother Teresa; “Every time you smile at someone, it is an act of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.” What does Mary think is the most rewarding part of volunteering at The Bloom Closet? “Just giving,” she says. “Whether it’s my time, my help, or just a smile.”
